Germany has some top class facilities and attracts its fair share of productions despite a higher price point than many Eastern European neighbours. Sci-fi feature Stowaway, about an unwanted passenger on a mission to Mars who damages the spaceship’s life support systems, shot between Bavaria Studios in Munich and MMC in Cologne. Wes Anderson also returned to Berlin’s Babelsberg to shoot his latest feature The French Dispatch.
The country has a network of location offices and film commissions that provide consulting and access to local authorities, government departments and companies.
The post-production sector is thriving with Hollywood and companies such Pixmondo have offices in Frankfurt and Stuttgart. Rise FX has also provided VFX services for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Doctor Strange.
Germany has a well deserved reputation as an industry hub so all standard and specialised equipment is readily available.
More than 50% of the leading film technology companies are based in Germany. From the manufacture to distribution of motion picture cameras, digital intermediate and lighting equipment, Germany is a hot-spot for developing technologies.
CINEC, the International Trade Fair for Cine Equipment and Technology, also takes place every two years in Munich.
PERSONALIZED ATTENTION
Entry requirements
Germany is a member of the European Union (EU). There are no restrictions on the movement of personnel and goods within the EU.
If you are planning on bringing equipment in from outside the EU, the ATA carnet system would be the best approach.
The ATA carnet, also known as the merchandise passport, is an internationally-recognised customs document that allows goods to move into foreign markets free of duty and tax.
It is recognised in 85 countries and territories and, as an EU member, Germany is part of the system.
